04/06/02: Ann and I went out with the realtor to look at three houses on a cool but sunny saturday. The first house was a Geodesic Dump, err.. I mean Dome. It was incomplete and needed everything including a major cleaning. The third house did not meet my basement or garage requirements, was on too small a lot, and was so sterile (white walls, grey carpets) that it was nothing compared to the second house we saw. We couldn't get any pictures that day. We put in an offer and signed paperwork beginning the process.
04/08/02: This was our first major walk through the house since seeing it. The house is nice has a lot of potential, HUGE yard, but the inspection revealed a serious problem in the cellar. A support beam made of steel had been completely eaten away by leaking water and was rusted into a beam-shaped slab of not-so-solid rust. Click here to see the "bomb shelter" pics.
04/10/02: The contractor showed up and looked everything over. He noted that the driveway drains towards the house and is a major contributor to the leaking in the cellar. The estimate should be ready tomorrow. I need to call a paver to have the driveway resurfaced and graded away from the house. I'll do that tomorrow.
04/17/02: OK, I got the quotes for the repairs needed to shore up the house and dry out the cellar and the total comes to about $10,000. We tendered the offer to the seller and she agreed to $5,000. We accepted. Now we have to get serious about selling the old house so we can move.
05/05/02: Closing is tomorrow, May 6 at 10:30AM. Since she has up to 60 days occupancy, we won't be moving in right away. However, we will be able to see the house with more detail and provide some more pictures upon subsequent visits.
05/06/02: WE OWN IT NOW!! The seller indicated that she will probably need to the entire 60 days for occupancy because the occupants of her new home won't be clearing out until July. So we now own two homes. closing took about 2 hours because last minute documents had to be faxed back and forth. Our signature hands are sore and our wallets are empty. We look forward to being able to have everyone over for a party. It'll be bring your own!
06/26/02: We have finally received, countered, and accepted an offer for the old-new house (the other one being the new-old house). Next is the inspection. Closing is scheduled for August 2. Stay tuned.
07/01/02: I took posession of the keys and began moving stuff in. Click here to see the latest pics on the status of the house and the move.
