1966 Transmission Rebuild

thumbnail
First, a donor car, from which to learn.
thumbnail
It's a '67 Sedan.
thumbnail
Oh, it's been here for 14 years...
thumbnail
The owner is GIVING it to me.
thumbnail
Hmm... Looks like animals have been here.
thumbnail
Look like they've been here recently...
thumbnail
Looks like they're still here!
thumbnail
Surprise! We woke up the possum!
thumbnail
Isn't he a cutie!
thumbnail
The car is a mess.
thumbnail
Mold and mildew have taken over the interior.
thumbnail
We hauled it to my house for the transmission removal.
thumbnail
The truck driver was impressed with its size.

thumbnail
I washed one half to see what it would look like.
thumbnail
Inside is still bad in daylight.
thumbnail
Nice pattern in the cloth seat.
thumbnail
the car could have shined up nicely.
thumbnail
To get the trunk ope, Keith removed the cylinder.
thumbnail
A squirrel's jackpot!
thumbnail
Mexican car horn?
thumbnail
Brand new spare?
thumbnail
This is as good as it got.

thumbnail
Start by removing the upper bolts before you raise the car.
thumbnail
We had it as high as we dared.
thumbnail
Blocks and jack stands pushed it up.
thumbnail
Here's Doug after removing his trophy: a sending unit.
thumbnail
He used it as a core for a replacement from Bakers.
thumbnail
Poof. It is removed.
thumbnail
It was one FREAKIN' heavy trans.
thumbnail
We used what we learned pulling the '67's to remove my '66's.
thumbnail
The trans is coated with oil and the oil is painted!
thumbnail
Miss a bolt and you break your bell housing. This will be repaired later.
thumbnail
We cleaned and cleaned and cleaned...
thumbnail
Lots of soap and elbow grease to get off years of oil.
thumbnail
It's probably not the most environmentally friendly thing to do.
thumbnail
When it was done it was clean.
thumbnail
You can actually see the trans!
thumbnail
FoMoCo... like MoFo?
thumbnail
Casting numbers are ledgible now.
thumbnail
RF-C6VP-7A040 (FoMoCo)
thumbnail
The flex plate and ring gear reveal no rear main leak.
thumbnail
There is oil all over the underbody though.
thumbnail
I repaired the BH with a little JB Weld.
thumbnail
The clamp held it while the JB Weld cured.
thumbnail
Our tear-down bench is a board on some saw horses.
thumbnail
This is the '66's Park/Neutral Switch. It was on the side of the trans for only pat of the '66 model year.
thumbnail
Remove the pan and the valve-body and you can see the guts.
thumbnail
Here's the valve body, draining.
thumbnail
The front pump is removed.
thumbnail
Here is the front pump, one main gear, and the drum.
thumbnail
Empty trans?
thumbnail
Look inside and see your future....
thumbnail
Keith carefully replaces thrust bearings, etc.
thumbnail
keith replaced them one at a time.
thumbnail
I don't know what these parts are waiting for.
thumbnail
We reasembled the trans the opposite as it was disassembled.
thumbnail
Coating the friction parts with trans fluid is essential to good initial wear.
thumbnail
Slide everything back in.
thumbnail
Almost done.
thumbnail
This is the last step to getting it back in.
thumbnail
No trans jack means wood is your tool.
